Microsoft announced that Xbox LIVE is coming to PC, with Fable III, Age of Empires Online, and a new game inspired by Flight Simulator amongst the first titles to be available through the online service.

The announcement of LIVE for PC coincides with the expansion of Microsoft’s online community into the mobile market, with the launch of Windows Phone 7 this December. A whole raft of launch titles for their new mobile platform were premiered at Gamescom, including companion games for popular Xbox titles like Halo: Waypoint and Crackdown 2: Project Sunburst.

Microsoft needs to invest in PC gaming after a short hiatus from the platform, says Microsoft Games Studios GM, Dave Luehmann.

Speaking to CVG at Microsoft’s GamesCom showcase this afternoon, Luehmann argued that the Windows house can’t expect third-party developers to support the platform if it’s not willing to itself.

Microsoft this week have announced a new, old, game title – Age of Empires Online. The game is currently in close-beta and Microsoft have already opened up registrations to test it.

Anyone interested in the Closed Beta can apply at www.ageofempiresonline.com/beta. Microsoft will be selecting participants for the Beta over several weeks. If you applied and did not get in right away, just give it some time.

Texas-based development studio id Software, creators of popular shooter franchises such as Doom and Quake, believe PC gaming is not on its deathbed.

Studio President Todd Hollenshead recently told IGN he believes that given the popularity of Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, along with PC technology significantly outpacing the hardware found in home consoles, PC gaming will continue to be a force in the industry.

Increased monetization of online shooters is coming, and gamers adamantly opposed to emerging business models should probably get used to the idea.

Recent speculation about charging subscription fees for online shooters came about when Activision CEO Bobby Kotick — who has before mentioned a Call of Duty MMO — openly mused this summer how he “would have Call of Duty be an online subscription service tomorrow” if he could.

Bioshock is back! Irrational Games and 2k Games have just announced details regarding the third Bioshock installment, infinite.
